What made you start your business?
Small: A number of reasons honestly! Overall I wanted to do something fulfilling with my life and find a way to push and challenge my creativity that I’ve kept suppressed throughout my college years and even my 9 to 5 lifestyle. I’ve always had a passion for all things hair, but the idea never crossed my mind to start a business in this industry because I felt like I wasn’t an expert or a professional stylist. I’ve later learned that you don’t have to be. Just have a vision and think outside the box to execute it!
What does your company offer?
Small: My company offers handcrafted all-natural hair products that are free of unnecessary fillers and harmful ingredients as well as high quality Raw Indian hair extensions. My company embraces being “natural” whether it’s through our predominantly plant based ingredients or unprocessed extensions.
Which of your product(s) offered in the mix?
Small: For the month of February, I’ll be offering the ‘Organic Aloe and Neem Hair Conditioning Mist’, which is an all-around multipurpose product. It’s great for refreshing curls, can be used as leave-in conditioner, light hair moisturizer, and a detangling agent.
What other products do you sell?
Small: The ‘Castor & Emu Scalp Oil’ is a great product used to nourish the scalp and promote hair growth. It can also be used as a sealant and hot oil treatment! Another great product is the Mango & Kokum Whipped Hair and Body Butter, which can be used to moisturize and seal your strands and also moisturize the skin. I love formulating products that can be used for more than one purpose!
The Raw Indian hair extensions is something else that we offer in three different textures to suit your needs. Stay tuned for more textures and hair products to be released!
How should subscribers feel after using your product?
Small: I want women to feel good and at ease about using my product because it is something that will provide the very best nourishment to their hair. Everything is handcrafted with love, completely natural, and rich—not watered down whatsoever.
Do you have any advice for new entrepreneurs?
Small: My advice is to plan accordingly, but make sure that you have actions behind your plans. Take the time to do the research, but eventually, you’ll have to take that leap of faith and go for it. A good idea is to create weekly To Do lists to hold yourself accountable.
What are some of the challenges you’ve overcome with your business?
Small: I’m a very new business; launched late Nov 2016, so there has been a ton of challenges so far. The main challenge has been funding my business. I’m too new to be approved for a business loan since I don’t have any business credit and so I’ve been bootstrapping it myself from the start with my savings. It has caused me to make many sacrifices in my life in order to make this dream possible, but having another source of income and getting sales has helped tremendously.
What’s a business goal that you hope to accomplish this year?
Small: I plan on increasing my internet presence through creative marketing techniques, building a community of women through engagement, as well as partnering with a non-profit in Atlanta because I want to have an impact in the community. Expanding my product line and working with a few retailers are some other major goals of mine.
What is your company’s mission?
Small: My company seeks to empower women by providing quality products that allows one to embrace their natural beauty, but also allow them to feel confident enough to “switch it up” by wearing a weave despite what others may think.
What’s one thing that you want people to know about you?
Small: I graduated with a degree in Biology and planned on becoming a Physician Assistant after college. It’s crazy how life works out because I now work as an Environmental Specialist and own a business! I followed my passion and told myself that I wouldn’t let fear and doubt take over my life.
If you could describe your brand in one word, what would it be and why?
Small: Versatility; which ties back into my mission statement. The products that I provide can be used for different purposes, but looking at the bigger picture, it’s for the woman that doesn’t like to be put in a box. She can wear her natural hair and take good care of it, but also switch it up sometimes and wear a bomb wig or sew in because she can!
